Roughly a hundred thousand students enter. Thirty are selected. The system has a plan for the thirty and no plan at all for the rest, and the rest are where the mathematical capability of a country actually lives.

I have written about the structure of the olympiad pathway and about what competition trains versus what research needs. Both of those were arguments about design. This one is about a person.

Somewhere this year, a student sat the IOQM, did well enough to reach the next stage, worked hard for months, sat the RMO, and placed somewhere around four hundredth.

That is a genuinely strong result. It puts them in a tiny fraction of a percent of students in the country. Nobody will ever tell them that, because the system has no mechanism for telling them, and the only signal they receive is that their name is not on the list.

I want to think about what happens to that person next, because I think it is the most consequential unexamined output of the whole apparatus.

What they were told and what they heard

What they were told: they did not qualify for the INMO.

What a sixteen-year-old hears: I am not good at mathematics.

Those are wildly different statements and the gap between them is where the damage is. The first is a fact about a ranking on one paper on one day against a specific set of problems. The second is an identity claim, and identity claims at that age are durable.

Nobody intends this. The result letter is not unkind. It simply contains no information about what the result means, and in the absence of interpretation, a person supplies their own, and the one they supply is almost always about their worth rather than their ranking.

The cliff

Here is the structural fact I keep coming back to.

The day before the result, this student is a person who does mathematics. They have a study group, a set of books, problems in progress, a reason to spend Sunday on geometry.

The day after, there is nothing scheduled. No next event they are eligible for. No society they belong to. No journal accepting their solutions. No seminar. No correspondence course. Nothing that says the activity continues independent of the ranking.

So the study group dissolves because it existed to prepare for a specific examination. The books go on a shelf. The Sunday goes to JEE preparation, which has the advantage of being a system that is still willing to have them.

Within a few months, a person who was doing mathematics for its own reasons is doing none, and the reason is not that they lost interest. It is that the only structure available was attached to a selection event, and they exited the selection event.

I do not think this is anyone’s fault. I think it is the predictable output of building the entire visible structure of a subject around a funnel.

What is lost

Mathematicians. The correlation between olympiad rank at sixteen and research ability at thirty is real and it is not close to one. Plenty of strong mathematicians were not competition standouts, and the traits that matter most in research, patience with an ill-posed question and tolerance for being stuck for months, are close to invisible in a three-hour paper. Someone who places four hundredth under time pressure may be considerably better than the winner at the thing research requires. The system has no way to find that out and no reason to look.

Everyone else. Teachers, engineers, people who write good software, people who will run a company and need to think clearly about uncertainty. A country’s mathematical capability is not thirty people. It is the depth of the population that can reason quantitatively, and that population is exactly the group being told, implicitly, to stop.

The subject’s reputation. Every student who leaves with the belief that they are not a maths person becomes an adult who says so, sometimes to their own children. The message propagates.

It is a design choice

Selection has to be selective. Six people go to the IMO and that number is fixed. I am not arguing for less rigour in the selection.

I am arguing that the selection event should not be the entire structure, and that this is a choice rather than a constraint.

Compare it to how other pursuits handle the same shape. Someone who plays cricket and does not make a state team keeps playing cricket. There are clubs, local leagues, informal games, a whole ecology of participation that has nothing to do with selection. Nobody who fails a trial concludes they are not a cricket person, because the sport exists independently of its selection process.

Mathematics in India has almost none of that. There are private circles in a few cities and a scattering of online communities. There is no default, no local club, no thing you can join in a district town after you did not qualify.

That is a gap, and it is a cheap one to fill relative to almost anything else in education policy. Problem columns, correspondence programmes, student journals, local societies, seminar series. None of these need buildings or equipment.

Cheap to build, obviously needed, and unbuilt for decades. That combination usually means the thing is waiting on somebody to decide it is theirs to do, rather than on money or permission.

What I would actually want to exist

A permanent society that any interested student can join, independent of any result. Membership as a statement about interest, not achievement.

A journal that publishes student work. Solutions, expositions, small original observations. The act of writing mathematics for readers is different from solving problems for markers, and it is closer to what research is.

Local chapters that meet, so that the study group has a reason to persist after the examination that formed it has passed.

Results reported with interpretation. Not just a rank. A percentile, a sentence explaining what it means, and a list of things to do next that are not the same examination again.

And explicit continuation for people who do not advance. The message that the pathway ends and the subject does not.

The thing I would say to them

You did well. Four hundredth out of a hundred thousand is a real result and the system will not tell you so.

The ranking measured how many of a particular kind of problem you could solve in a particular number of hours on a particular day. That is a narrow instrument. It is a real instrument and it measured something real, and it did not measure whether you can think, whether you will still be curious at twenty-five, or whether you can sit with a question for a year.

Almost nobody who does mathematics for a living was selected for anything at sixteen.

The pathway is over. Nothing else is, and the only thing that determines whether you keep going is whether you decide to, because no institution is going to schedule it for you.

That is the failure I would most like to see fixed, and until somebody fixes it, the decision falls to the student. Which is a lot to ask of a sixteen-year-old holding a letter that says they did not make it.
